2010 Gulf Coast Disaster Recovery: New Orleans, LA
First Church has now led seven Katrina Relief Teams. The first of our Katrina Relief teams departed January, 2009. The team took building materials and worked on homes that were devastated by the floods. Since 2005, First Church has organized two teams each year to return to New Orleans help with the clean-up phase and are now working in the rebuilding phase of recovery.
Iowa Disaster Recovery
Oakville, Iowa Revisited. Members of First Church joined 28 other volunteers from 8 churches to work on homes flooded in June of 2008. Roofing, installation of trim, painting, mudding and sanding of drywall, installation of doors and flooring, replacing floor joists, clean up to rehab was done last week. Five homes were worked on from Thursday through Saturday. This is the third volunteer trip for many of the volunteers.
Walk-in-Ministry
Glen Ellyn Walk-In Ministry is housed at First Church and was organized by GE churches in 1994 to provide a single source of compassionate aid to those in need. The ministry is staffed by volunteers who assist persons referred by the churches of the Village. The hours are from 10:00am to Noon, Monday through Friday.
Welcome Center
The Welcome Center for the homeless is open Sunday afternoons from October to April each year. On Sundays 20 to 80 homeless are welcomed into First Church. The hospitality includes soup or other foods, a place to rest, reading material, a TV, bathrooms, etc.
Approximately 70 volunteers make the program work. If you would like to know more about this program or volunteer this Fall, please contact the church office (630.469.3510) or connect@gefumc.org and Richard Dunn, the Welcome Center coordinator, will contact you.
First Church's Monthly Outreach for Missions
Through the generosity of members and friends of this congregation, we are able to provide extra, non-budgeted support. Those who receive monthly envelopes can place an outreach offering in the red-striped envelope, mail to the church office, or drop in the weekly offering plate.
P.A.T.H (Providing Affordable Transitional Housing)
The P.A.T.H. ministry of the First United Methodist Church of Glen Ellyn is an outreach ministry whose mission is to
1. Help homeless families in DuPage County achieve independence through partnership with Bridge Communities and their transitional housing program.
2. Provide church members and friends with an opportunity to support, participate and grow in a program that reaches out to families in need within our community and seeks long-term solutions to the issues surrounding homelessness.
3. Raise awareness of homeless issues here in DuPage County through ongoing communication with our congregation and our community.
